Overmolding & Insert Molding Services
Overmolding adds a second material over a pre-molded substrate — typically a soft TPE or TPU over a rigid plastic. Insert molding molds plastic around a metal or other pre-placed component. Both create a single, durable part with better grip, sealing or strength.
Typical Applications
- Soft-touch grips on tools, handles and devices
- Overmolded cable strain reliefs and seals
- Threaded brass inserts, pins and terminals molded in place
- Knobs, buttons and automotive interior parts
Getting the Bond Right
Bond strength depends on material pairing, substrate surface, temperatures and mechanical interlocks. We specify compatible grades, add undercuts or through-holes where chemical adhesion alone isn’t enough, and design shut-offs that keep soft-material edges clean and flash-free.
Overmolding vs. Two-Shot
Overmolding uses two molds (or an insert loaded into one) and is often the economical choice for low to mid volumes or when the substrate comes from another supplier. Two-shot is better for high volume. We’ll recommend one based on your quantity and part design.
Insert Molding Details
We design insert location, retention and anti-rotation features, and can source the metal inserts for you.
